What makes a poem good? How do you recognize a good poem?

-is it in the flow of the poem? the theme? the structure?

good day, fellow poetry geeks =DA good poem has to be appealing to the eye in that it draws the reader in through how it looks at first glance. After initial impressions then some sort of thread of a story has to begin to form with evocative language and description which actually makes you care. Something that can draw you in with its sense of emotion and intensity which is illustrated in the pace the poem takes. The rhythm shouldn't be used in a tacky rhyme sense, though sometimes this can be used to advantage, but to illustrate the drama (or lack of) that is going on.



For me a good poem makes everything else stop for one moment while you digest what you've just read. A bit like a story really. The beauty is in the language for me and the story that is told.



From a more critical point of view the theme is the main concern and how the poet illustrates this is primary with the results of this being secondary.



But just as with everything it all comes down to personal preference!The thing is to poetry there is no certain strucute that is followed or any certain way it should be written! Most people think poetry that everything is suppose to rhyme when infact thats only some poems. There are some poems that some verses are about a paragraph long and some where its one phrase to make one stanza!

To make a great flow of a poem is if u have a great clear theme in mind like if u want to tell a story or have many examples to represent one saying I mean all you got to do is think creativity and put sayings! and not to think in a literal way or in a ways that essays are written with just facts! throw in your own life in it! U know?! be loud be calm! Explain things in a way through ur own spirit! Be yourself!

For me when I look for poems, it all depends on my mood cause somedays Im feeling really happy so I pick up my favorite poetry book and read all the exciting poems to create beautiful images! All it is! IS URSELF!
Creativity, content, emotion; A poem that shows more than tell, but it's also how it's shown. You have to find your voice, and deliver it in a unique way.

A good poem draws the readers attention. It says things in a more interesting way. It is explained a lot and very deatailed in a short way. You should go on fictionpress and look at some really good ones.
